A New Gathering Place

Our plan for The Mither Kirk is for a place that ‘beckons’ in local people and visitors, that becomes the focal point of central Aberdeen and the focus for introducing people to a significant part of the story of the City, as well as providing education and entertainment. Part of its appeal will be in the range of services and facilities on offer, while still retaining a place for worship.  It will be a place for everyone: a destination that is active, attractive, informative and inclusive – a gathering place that evokes a sense of community within the community.

The Mither Kirk will be a place of inspiration in all senses, widening horizons in all directions and being, essentially, of the people, for the people and by the people. It seeks to become a favoured and favourite destination, not a revered or feared institution. Above all, it will be fun to visit without in any way debasing the essential integrity of the Kirk, its Kirkyard, its heritage and its associations. That is the challenge for this fundraising campaign.

This is a Kirk that has always responded physically, culturally and spiritually to the changing needs of the Church as a whole, the City and the community.

“The new and varied functions, which it will in future serve, will encourage a wide range of people to use and enjoy it, while not losing touch with its central and ancient focus”

Judith Stones, Keeper, Archaeology, Aberdeen City Council

“There is certainly a real need for a dedicated and beautiful performance arena in the centre of town and this is in the right place and at the right time”.

Lorna Dey Cultural Co-ordinator, (Museums, Galleries and Heritage)
